Went via Harlyn after recommendations for a Westerly wind but it would need
more wind than today with the shelter from the cliffs either side of the
bay. Crawling with surfers competing for the dumpy shorebreak so I opted
for Daymer.
The doom bar was working so I opted for the big waveboard and 5.2 which was
a mistake. The onshore launch in light winds made it difficult to get
planing let alone get upwind. I resigned myself to playing around with
heli-tacks wishing I'd lugged the freestyle board down to the low tide
mark. Most cleared off the water apart from 3 of us when the cloud passed
and the wind crept up to a solid F4 gusting 5. First few planing runs and
I was settled nicely in the straps so my thoughts turned to rotations.
Having never tried a port tack loop I had nothing to lose; first couple
were nice rotations for me and the rig but the board stayed where it was -
still, it was a start. The next attempt I bottled, the wind had picked up
but that was no excuse, and bailed out of a steep nose first landing which
wasn\'t ideal in 2ft of water. The next few attempt were rotating the
other way but not enough ramp to be worth it.
Carried on until the sun slipped behind the hill then called it a day. An
excellent evening considering the disappointing start, and the tacks are
back up to speed.
